Suffrage Rally & Drama

August 27 (Saturday) 10 A.M.
Bartlesville Community Center

Just four years before Jane Gibson Phillips was born, a trial was held in Canandaigua, New York. Susan B. Anthony, convinced that the 14th amendment to the constitution provided the sacred right to vote to all natural born citizens of the United States, exercised that right by voting! She then stood trial as a criminal, charged with being a woman and therefore a bit of property under the law, not a citizen!

Her trial, called the trial of the half-century, will be re-enacted on August 27 at the Washington County Courthouse. This is Bartlesville Women's Network's way to commemorate the 85th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment, which stated clearly that a citizen could not be denied the franchise on account of sex.

The Rally for Suffrage will begin at 10 a.m. at the Bartlesville Community Center, where the story of the suffragists will be enacted. Then there will be singing of some of the 1847 - 1920 songs of suffrage, and a parade to the Courthouse. Those in period costume will get the best seats!

District Judge Janice Dreiling will play the role of Susan B. Anthony at her trial. Various members of the legal profession and other noteworthy citizens will portray the attorneys and jurors. Joanne Bennett and Carolyn Price will be Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton as correspondents during the years of the campaign for suffrage.

Following the trial, refreshments will be served at the Brtlesville Community Center. This will be a morning you will not soon forget. Plan to join us on Saturday, August 27, at 10 a.m. at the Community Center!
